Photographic Collection

Photographic Collection

The photographic collection of Gazi Husrev-bey Library contains around 20.000 photographs and postcards.
The fund is divided into two sections: old and new. The old section that includes 2.192 units presents mainly old photographs of Bosnian towns and Islamic culture buildings, photographs of persons, Bosnian ulama, old Bosnian families, Bosnian costumes, etc.

This section of the fund is composed largely of old postcards. The new section of the fund holds photographs taken recently as well as photographs currently being taken. The fund is expanded by camerawork in the field, occasional purchases and donations.

All photographs of the new section are sorted out into several groups according to various criteria. This means that every branch of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Majlis) is presented with photographs of mosques and other Islamic buildings existing in a particular area.

In short, every segment of the life of Bosnia and Herzegovina, its material culture and natural heritage, is more or less present in the photographs of the photographic fund.

The fund may be used by researchers who study the areas or topics presented in the photographs of this fund.

Postage stamps

An addition to the fund comprises a collection of postage stamps. Especially valuable and beautiful is the one with Islamic motives from all over the world donated by Ihsan Zulfikarpašić, a Bosnian emigrant to the United States of America. These stamps originate from all Islamic countries and countries largely populated by Muslims.

The collection consists of five albums with hundreds of stamps divided by categories: Qur’an, Messenger Muhammed, prayers, Islamic education, Islamic conferences, Islamic art, Islamic architecture, Islamic folklore, and Islamic figures.
